Division 1 College Lacrosse Players from Michigan: 2022

Getting D1 lacrosse talent to stay close to home has never been much of an issue in Michigan.

The real challenge has been that most of that talent has been concentrated in the same in-state program.

There were 81 players from Michigan on Division 1 college lacrosse rosters in 2022.

33 of those players chose to play D1 in their native state; but almost all—26 out of the 33–were playing at Detroit Mercy.

Only 7 were on the  roster at the state’s flagship program at the University of Michigan.

But even that’s an improvement.

As shown in the list of former D1 players below, the state has been producing D1 talent since the 1980’s; but the bulk of the best lacrosse players from Michigan spent their D1 careers at schools outside the state.

And for an obvious reason.

For a number of years, Michigan didn’t offer much in terms of D1 lacrosse opportunities.

Though it’s now largely receded from popular memory, Michigan State did, in fact, have a D1 program; it even managed to tap some top-level instate talent. (Cranbrook’s Jon Gaimpetroni, for instance, was one of the leaders of the Spartans’ 1987 team, the first to reach the NCAA Tournament. Other noteworthy Michigan high school players who found their way to MSU included Rob Dameron and Doug Jolly).

But the Spartan program was eliminated in 1997.

Detroit Mercy’s D1 program started from scratch in 2009, and has since consistently drawn heavily from instate high school ranks.

The roster for Michigan’s inaugural D1 team in 2012, on the other hand, was able to tap the school’s elite MCLA team; that Wolverine team had 13 players from instate.

Then the numbers went down. By 2014, there were only 8 Michiganders on the roster. By  2017 there were only 2.

But Michigan’s instate appeal seems to be rising—bolstered in part by new lacrosse facilities that rank among the best in the nation,  and by a highly-regarded coach with ties to three other Big Ten programs (Kevin Conry played defense at Hopkins, spent a year on the staff at Penn State, and was the defensive coordinator in 2017 under John Tillman at Maryland, when the Terps, for the first time since 1975, won a national championship).

By 2021 there were 7 Michiganders on the Wolverine roster, including high school scoring champion Bryce Clay, who rejoins the team in 2023 after missing the ’22 season with an injury.

Among the instate recruits for ’23 will be Hartland attackman Bo Lockwood, who became only the second player in Michigan high school history to surpass 500 points (the first being Clay).
